Liveblogging the Shows: Michael Kors

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in at Fashion Week as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: ladylike sportswear from Michael Kors.

Show location: The Tent at Bryant Park
The skinny: Sheath dresses, trenches, cardigans over button-downs over trousers, brushed-wool coats: the clothing was clean, sleek and impeccable. Kors threw in some fur, and brightened the collection up with bursts of neon. That nod to the eighties was matched by the show's soundtrack—poppy New Order mixed with Coldplay.
Celebs spotted: Hardly any celebs turned out for Kors, which surprised us. His friend Heidi Klum showed up, looking radiant as usual. Robert Verdi, who is everywhere this Fashion Week, arrived early and gamely did some interviews.
The takeaway: Kors did what he does best: streamlined, classic silhouettes that really flatter. Like Marc, he's looking back to the 80's, but in a toned-down, wearable way.

10:50am: I'm inside the tent. This is one of the biggest shows so far—there are two rows of seats back-to-back in the middle of the runway, and nine rows on either side—but so far it seems pretty empty. Suze Yalof Schwartz is interviewing someone up front, and I see Robert Verdi with his glasses on top of his bald head as usual, but no other celebs. Where are all his Project Runway friends?

10:56am: Robert Verdi is doing an interview. No other notables have arrived.

10:58am: Hamish Bowles is front row, reading the paper.

11:02am: We have celebrity! Think it's Molly Sims, but hard to tell as she is too far away.

11:04am: See some old blonde dames getting their photo taken. Not sure who they are. Sims confirmed, though.

11:09am: Filling up, but no other celebs yet. Not what I expected from the Kors.

11:12am: See Anna front row with a dead animal draped around her neck. She looks happy today.

11:13am: Sorry, Hamish is in the second row. There's a new celeb here, but I can only see the back of her head. Short, very blond hair.

11:14am: Heidi has arrived, thank God. Her hair is slicked back and of course she looks great.

11:16am: Hamish moves up to take his rightful place beside Anna.

11:24am: It begins! First looks are black, with patent leather accents. Then a giant day-glo lime green coat, like Big Bird under a blacklight, comes parading down the runway. Whoa.

11:26am: Fall trends in effect: Leather dresses, giant neckwear (both necklaces and scarves.) Models have hair slicked back into buns; many are wearing sunglasses.

11:27am: That day-glo chartreuse keeps popping up, most recently in the form of a big fluffy trapper hat. You could wear that hunting and no one would mistake you for a deer.

11:29am: Neon yellow-green is done. Now it's all about a shocking shade of construction cone orange. That hat reappears in this new shade. Everything else is black or cool gray, sophisticated, kind of conservative.

11:31am: Starting to see some khakis and fur-colored fur (as opposed to neon fur.) Wool sleeveless trench, lots of one-shouldered silhouettes, belts everywhere. Models are going really fast, btw—it's kind of crazy. They're all over the place! And the music is Coldplay (kind of dorky) and the Cure.

11:32am: Wow. Pink.

11:34am: Now we're on to pounding 80s beats and shimmering fabric and sequins. Lots of drapey fronts and asymmetrical shapes on these party dresses.

11:36am: Now it's over—closed with Coldplay's "Clocks." I think Anna liked it.

11:40am: When it ended, he got a ton of applause. He was so smiley and adorable.
