Liveblogging the Shows: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being at Fashion Week as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: Laid-back looks from 3.1 Phillip Lim

Show location: The Tent at Bryant Park
The skinny: Short and long band jackets, bowl-cut hair, and black shearling coats came down the runway to music from a live rock band. The tent was all black, as were many of the looks, which were paired with maroon tights and dangerously high heels. So high one model just said "screw it", and took them off.
Celebs spotted: They trotted out the celebs—Kanye plus entourage, and Lucy Lui—at the very last minute. The paparazzi had to settle for shots of the omnipresent Joy Bryant and Becki Newton of Ugly Betty until the show began.
The takeaway: Phillip Lim's version of rock 'n' roll is more cute than sexy, and there's nothing wrong with that. The men's looks weren't too notable, but we see those adorable ladies band jackets selling really well.

2:53pm: I'm inside the Tent, and everything is black in here. The seats, the walls, the backdrop—all black. The front row seats have a little bag with swag, but I'm not sure what's in it. Spotted: Faran, formerly of Fashionista and now a Nylon editor.

3:57pm: It's very dark in here and no one is even seated yet. Photographers are mauling Anna.

3:02pm: The queen of Stylista is here. Looks like she is limping. Or maybe that's just how she walks in heels.

3:05pm: Some celeb is here in a wide-brimmed hat with a feather. Impossible to tell who she is.

3:07pm: Also see Joy Bryant. Does she sleep in the tents? She is everywhere.

3:10pm: Becky Newton from Ugly Betty is here, I think, sitting next to Joe Zee and Robbie Myers from Elle.

3:14pm: Nonsociety crew do not appear to be seated together. Drama? Julia is standing around looking lost.

3:19pm: Whew. She got a front-row seat. Lifecasting crisis averted.

3:22pm: Bill Cunningham from the New York Times is tottering in.

3:26pm: They're clearing the runway. Leigh Lezark of the Misshapes is five seats from Anna in the front row.

3:30pm: The lights come up on a live band and a ton of smoke. The runway is sort of checkerboarded, and there's a sort of half-arch over it with geometric patterns in lights. First looks: Jackets, maroon tights, ruffles, lots of white on top. Fur. Short, bang-heavy bowl cuts on the women.

3:32pm: Kanye is here with his crew. More looks: Pantsuits in a browney-orange and dusty pink. Men in WWI bomber hats. Some floral dresses on the ladies. And...a model loses a shoe.

3:35pm: I'm seeing a lot of skinny, patterned pants and variations on military and band-leader jackets. Many pieces have some kind of embellishment, like beads or shiny trim. The band, by the way, is Lissy Trullie. About this fact, the woman next to me says, "What, are we at Marc Jacobs?"

3:38pm: Long skirts, coats made of some kind of hair-like material. Definitely feeling the Marianne Faithfull girlfriend-of-a-Rolling-Stone vibe here, though the haircuts are more member-of-the-band.

3:39pm: I see Lucy Liu in killer heels, a black dress, and a ponytail. She's perched on the edge of her chair looking ready to flee. Anna, meanwhile, is pursing her lips. Clearly the loud rock hurts her ears.

3:46: Up close, the runway is all black with thick shiny black stripes. Never knew Lim was so rock and roll.
