Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
If you've been to a mall anytime in the past two weeks, you can understand why the once-a-month flea market was so popular this past Sunday: plenty of street parking, a cheery environment, a wide selection of goods at thrifty prices?and, oh yeah, it was fun. The sunny courtyard offered all kinds of different shopping experiences, from being able to peruse new goods that were hung "just so" on racks, to scavenging for treasure through piles of vintage clothing.
The merch was mainly for the ladies (vendors included LA Vintage Exchange, popomomo/Curatorial, Rossmore Jewelry, among others), but we really dug the bold graphics on the tees from ARKA Clothing, and we wish they'd print them on girly tees, too. Another new find was the Oh! Nena line of headbands. So stylish and unique?just look at the feathered headband pictured; wearing it can indeed make you happy.
Unfortunately, we had to rush off before the Banshee Beat DIY class. Banshee Beat (a.k.a. the lovely Miss Shelby DiMarco) is the reigning collage queen of Space 15 Twenty, and her Sunday tutorial was about making a festive holiday charm/ornament/necklace/wear-it-where-you-want-it piece. (We borrowed a couple of her pictures; hopefully, we'll see her at the next one.)
One reason the flea market is such a vibrant hodgepodge of vendors and merchandise is that it's free to exhibit. Go on down to the next one (January 17) and show a little love so this jewel of an event can keep growing.
