Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The official word is that it could be tomorrow; it could be two weeks from tomorrow: Floyd's 99 at 1555 North Cahuenga will open its doors for business. The only thing is, it's just one door away from Hairroin Salon. The move does rather strike us like a Starbucks opening up shop next to a cool indie coffe house (and we all know how that story goes). Barbershops and salons are clearly not the same thing (though Floyd's offers cutting and coloring services); Hairroin has a great reputation and a loyal fanbase, so the block is theoretically big enough for the both of them.
