Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Practically any night of the week, you can walk into karaoke at the Smog Cutter and see a skinny white guy with messy hair and an ironic vintage tee belting out “Gangster’s Paradise” or “Gin & Juice.” Is this who we should expect to see rocking the latest Opening Ceremony collab, the Timberland boots that just debuted at Opening Ceremony’s store on La Cienega? While OC is one of the penultimate names in hipster fashion, Timberland is the kind of boot (and label) we're used to seeing on rappers and people who flaunt a distinctly urban fashion. Is the sheer virtue of the Opening Ceremony brand name enough to overcome the context, history, and cultural signifiers associated with Timberland? Recent Opening Ceremony team-ups (Keds, Bass, via Chloë Sevigny) haven’t seemed the most?organic, but they’re well-executed and seem to have a specific audience in mind. It’s definitely an interesting crossover, but only time will tell whose feet these end up on.
