Last summer, Los Feliz independent bookstore Skylight Books opened its second shop, Skylight Books 1814 (named for the store's address on Vermont), a move that has apparently paid off well for the company. Writes Kerry Slattery, General Manager of Skylight in the store's monthly newsletter: "What a remarkable neighborhood we have... in spite of all the dire (and dour) economic predictions, you--our neighbors and friends--made it a particular point (we know because many of you told us) to purchase books as gifts for the holidays and to purchase them locally, from your community bookstore. As a result, our December sales were actually dramatically higher than 2007's sales! I have been assured that this is a remarkable outcome, and far from the national trend." Take that, Kindle!
