Politics of Fashion: More Obama In More Maria Pinto

Michelle Obama is clearly fashion savvy, which also includes the necessary aplomb for the politics of fashion. Case in point: on the heels of news that Cindy McCain wore an outfit to the RNC estimated at $300,000, WWD reports Obama will appear on the October cover of More magazine and insisted she "wear her own clothes for the shoot with Matthew Rolston (evening gowns were out, because they could look presumptuously inaugural) so she is pictured wearing (who else?) Maria Pinto." What a display of down-to-earthness! Our hats are off to you, Michelle (see, we feel comfortable addressing her by her first name), you really know how to negotiate the system, and with incredible poise. Apparently, Editor in chief Lesley Jane Seymour had been gunning for Obama since she "walked in the door" at More in January, and "if her husband hadn’t won the nomination, Michelle Obama would have been an inside 'second act' story." Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Geraldine Brooks wrote the cover story.
