Since opening its second outpost, Tortoise on Abbot Kinney has been busy refining each store. The owners have recently settled on a way to differentiate the new and original Tortoises: per the shop's newsletter, the original store is now called TGS (Tortoise General Store), "because we wanted be your neighborhood store that carries everyday products as well as your last minute gifts"; and the new store is called Tortoise. Also note new store hours: starting August 15, TGS is open Tue-Sat 11am-7pm and Sun 11am-6pm, and closed Mondays. Tortoise hours remain the same, opened Wed-Sun noon-6pm and by appointment, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Due to construction, TGS will be closed August 11-14, and Tortoise will be closed August 18-25.
For Tortoise's latest exhibition, the shop will feature the jewelry of Shunichiro Nakashima, starting today through Friday, August 8. The bright, multi-hued pieces of fiber, thread, beads and plastic are created by way of detailed weaving, twisting and tying techniques. Per Tortoise: "Silk and gold threads are hand dyed by artist himself, and necklace and bracelets made from cotton threads tied in knots that is rolled around a steel wire." We're definitely intrigued.
