Masse Appeal: Melissa Masse Welcomes Lesbian Weddings

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Like other retailers, designer/retailer Melissa Masse is in complete support of the legalization of same-sex marriages by the California Supreme Court. Per a recent email blast entitled "Lesbian Wedding!" from the boutique, just off Beverly Boulevard on Flores: "After years of waiting, ALL couples can now legally marry in California! But with such a small amount of time to not only plan a wedding, but to also plan what to wear, what's a person to do?" Naturally, the answer involves employing Masse's services: "Make an appointment with Melissa Masse at MASSE made to measure and have the wedding dress, suit or tuxedo of their dreams made!"

It's interesting because the sell continues with a sensitivity to both brides and the potential tug-and-pull involved with two women deciding what to wear on wedding day: "Your partner wants to wear a super traditional gown, while you want something slinky & sexy? Melissa can make them both! You haven't worn a suit since your 8th grade graduation, but need something stylish to make your partner happy, but comfortable to make you happy? Don't worry, Melissa will make it happen." We'll be watching to see how the marketing and selling tactics to this new customer base develops.
