Of late, the big question has been (and recurs throughout fashion history), are models dangerously thin? BET asks another question with its show, Fashion Blackout—airing Thursday, May 29 at 8:30pm—namely, has Black become unfashionable? Or, is the industry simply racist? Per PR Newswire: "Top Black industry insiders, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Naomi Campbell, Bethann Hardison, Tyson Beckford, Tracy Reese, Andre Leon Talley and many others sound off about the sharp decline in African American images in the fashion industry, the blatant racism and their plans on how to keep the Black model from becoming extinct." The discrepancy is underscored by the amount of money Black women spend on apparel each year—$20 billion per targetmarketnews.com.
