American Apparel lamely defended itself against the $10 million suit Woody Allen filed against the T-shirt brand's use of his image in billboards and ads in May, 2007 to DNR today. American Apparel reps told the men's fashion trade pub that "although it normally uses the two billboards for commercial purposes, 'we also use them as a vehicle for non-commercial, social and political commentary.'" The reps continued, "We had no intention of selling garments through the use of Mr. Allen’s image ? We will make every effort to resolve this with Mr. Allen in an amicable way." Uh, then why was the company's name slapped on the billboard? Not to connote the image with the brand? Nice try, AA. [DNR]
