Japanese design, housewares, and interiors shop Tortoise (photo via flickr bestbeon) at 1208 Abbot Kinney in Venice is opening a second outpost just down the street at 1342 1/2 Abbot Kinney. From an email from the store: "Because of your warm support, Tortoise is able to keep introducing great products of Japan. And we are stepping up for a new challenge..Tortoise is going to open a second store! As you may have noticed, we were running out of space ;) The second store will be on the same street and still be 'Japanese,' but mostly one-of-a-kind artists' pieces, vintage furniture and items, and Taku (co-owner)'s furniture." Despite the neighborhood's vehement anti-chain sentiments, our guess is shoppers will be pleased with the additional Tortoise offerings, especially since its first 700-square-foot shop hardly could count as big-box anything. Store is slated to open May 2; hours will be Wed-Sun noon-6pm or by appointment. [Racked Inbox] · Tortoise [tortoiselife.com]
