Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Rackage is a look inside recently-opened stores around town. Today, let's check out Illadelph on Melrose Avenue.
We repeat, these water pipes are for tobacco smoking purposes only! If your tobacco happens to be a bit wacky, that's on you, not Illadelph, the upscale glass gallery that opened up a few months ago on Melrose Avenue, a bit west of La Brea. The Philly-based company has wholesaled successfully for the last six years, but came out to LA to open its retail shop to avoid frequent raiding of such establishments on the East Coast. Take it from part owner Chip Dibble, Illadelph is serious about its equipment, with a team of artists that are required to have four-year degrees in glassblowing. Prices range from a $10 vaporizing sticks, $50-$60 pipes, to water pipes from $180-$900. A whole kit, which includes vacuum sealed jar, vaporizing stick, and water pipe with coil (put the coil in the freezer for a very smooth draw) is $5,000. More items are to come, such as custom skate decks and an equally artistic line of adult sex toys.
