As usual, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios got off to a frenzied start Sunday afternoon for fall '08 with scenesters making as much of a scene as possible, fashion press gearing up for runway shows, parties, collection previews and other events, and PRs running around in heels and headsets. Close your eyes. Envision the cliché, only less glamorous for those that watched too much Sex and the City.
Among the first day's line-up, Orthodox presented slim pants, leather jackets and suiting for men and women in a palette of grays, deep red and purple, and black.

Julia Clancey showed youthful, thigh-skimming cocktail dresses and bowed, tiered, bejeweled gowns, primarily in black and white.

Whitley Kros—designed by Marissa Ribisi (Beck's wife, Giovanni's twin) and Sophia Coloma (former co-owner of LA powerhouse boutique, Satine)—offered up a less cohesive but more dynamic looks for its sophomore collection. With a premium on prints and a definite Eighties influence, highlights included vibrant geometric prints on dresses, blouses and slouchy cashmere and pants.
