Mixed Messages: Why Did Urban Outfitters Pull a T-Shirt Supporting Gay Marriage?

At this point, it's common knowledge that Urban Outfitters owner Richard Hayne has donated thousands of dollars to right-wing causes, including the campaigns of former PA senator Rick "If we allow gay marriage, the next thing you know people will be marrying goldfish" Santorum. This story, though, is still pretty surprising: Urban pulled a line of "I support gay marriage" t-shirts in California after only selling them for a week, citing nonexistent (aside from one blog post) bad press.
