Designer Bettina Hubby invited an elect group of 40 guests on the Hubby Cotour 2008: the lucky few were driven in a rockstar bus (complete with champagne bar) through Silver Lake and Chinatown, with 10 stops at local landmarks and institutions that have a special meaning to the host (Skylight Books, Vista Theater, Cheetah Strip Club, The Wishing Well). At each site, a different artist (dressed in Hubby, of course) gave a performance ranging from an a capella chorale at the starting point at Barnsdall Art Park to the florist of Gilly Flowers creating exquisite accessories Hubby-style (as goodies to keep for the guests) and performance artist Peggy Pabustan doing a lap dance on the bus.
The showdown was at A+R with groovy grooves, amazing food from Mama’s Hot Tamales and delicious wine from Silverlake Wine. Besides the showcasing of Bettina’s unique upcycled pieces (brilliantly upbeat with a great sense of humor), it was especially refreshing to experience the vision of a designer confident enough to include fellow artists vision into her work.
