Last month, we posted that Japanese home/lifestyle/design shop Tortoise on Abbot Kinney was going to open a second shop, The New Tortoise, just down the street from the first at 1342 1/2 Abbot Kinney. We visited last weekend and found an organic feeling space, filled with owner Taku Shinomoto's custom furniture, much in gorgeous raw oak, plus one-of-a-kind pieces from other artists, metallic wallets and totes and other textiles. Co-owner and Taku's wife, Keiko Shinomoto, was manning the shop and told Racked that the original Tortoise will be going through a renovation in June and shoppers can look forward to an open kitchen for sushi classes and other activities. She also wanted to remind us that the new shop was still a work-in-progress, but it already looks pretty great to us. Though upmarket, the furniture still seems like a relatively good buy for its one-of-a-kind status; for instance, a low, glossy table, which would be a stunner in any living room, is $900, which actually hit us as worth the cost.
