Besides being rich, famous and genetically blessed, there's one thing that Chloë Sevigny, Rihanna, Cameron Diaz, Olivia Wilde and Hillary Swank all have in common: they're big fans of Kimberly Ovitz. Founded in 2009, the Cali native's eponymous label is for the girl looking for artfully-crafted garments that transcend trends and turn heads in the process.
Although she recently moved her Santa Monica design studio to New York, Ovitz still has tons of love for LA and makes it a point to hold private previews here each season. We swung by Cooper Design Space (860 S Los Angeles St) to catch up and learn more about her spring 2013 looks.
Do you visit LA often? Where do you like to go when you're here?
"I visit quite a bit! I love to make sure that I hit up all of my favorite spots, including Giorgio Baldi (114 W Channel Rd), Hamasaku (11043 Santa Monica Blvd), Café Gratitude (639 N Larchmont Blvd), Coffee Bean...the list goes on!"
Has growing up in LA shaped your design aesthetic?
"My design aesthetic has less to do with the location I grew up and more to do with my upbringing. My dad has always had a passion for minimal and modern art and design so I was surrounded by it since I was a kid. That language was engrained in me."
Was there a person, place or thing that inspired your spring colllection?
"A Kazakhstani performance artist named Almagul Menlibayeva. She creates fictitious imagery that is ritualistic looking but not pertaining to any specific religion. The images reflected the idea that one can create their own mythology. I thought that was an empowering message to spread."
If you could dress one movie character, which one would it have been?
"It would have to be Lara Croft in Tomb Raider."
Besides all your awesome Hollywood clients, who else would you love to see wearing your designs?
"Any really wonderful woman who is effortless and believes that less is more."
