Chloë Sevigny is the original It Girl. From starring in cult-classic films like Kids and Julien Donkey-Boy to designing clothing for Opening Ceremony to scoring her very own Apple Watch commercial to really dressing the best, the 41-year-old exudes cool, which is why every fashion girl follows her every move.
Ahead of her new film Love & Friendship—a clever adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Lady Susan, directed by Whit Stillman and also starring Kate Beckinsale—we sat down with the coolest girl in the world to learn her ways. After revealing that she gave the movie's costume designers a bit of a hard time ("I wanted more lace, more buttons, more details—I wanted my looks to feel as authentic as possible"), Sevigny gave us the exclusive scoop on all her current favorite things. See her official It Girl starter pack below, and copy all of it.
Current favorite book:
Any book by Cookie Mueller—one of those very tiny ones. I like to bring them on the subway.
Favorite film genre:
I'm all over the map! I go between fantasy and realism. I also love a good period drama. I want to do more period pieces because people see me as so contemporary.
Your signature drink:
It was tequila for so long, but I'm trying to move away from it seeing that I'm 41! But most people would definitely say my signature drink is tequila on the rocks.
Favorite place to shop in LA:
Wasteland on Melrose.
Favorite place to shop in NY:
Tokio 7. It's a consignment store.
Favorite restaurant in LA, and what you order:
Cafe Stella, and I get the steak.
Favorite restaurant in NY, and what you order:
Raoul's, and also the steak! [Laughs] I only eat red meat once a month or every two weeks.
Favorite drugstore beauty product:
Great Lash by Maybelline.
Favorite beauty product splurge:
Tatcha! I love their Luminous Dewy Skin Mist.
Go-to karaoke song:
I can't do karaoke—I'm so bad at it!
Favorite song to dance to:
"Let's Dance" by David Bowie.
Favorite band of all time:
The Velvet Underground, for their diversity and impact.
Favorite new artist:
Ty Segall, an LA singer and songwriter.
Favorite movie of all time:
It would have to be Badlands for its love story.
Three actresses at your dream dinner party:
Definitely Fairuza Balk because I find her really interesting. Plus, she's my age, so I think we started acting around the same time. Also, Marlene Dietrich and Jane Fonda—she's been relevant for so many decades!
Your favorite pair of shoes, ever:
Bass Weejuns—they're the most comfortable, they go with everything, and they're very me. I've been wearing them since I was a teenager.
Fashion trend you're putting to rest:
I'm trying to put platform shoes to rest. I'm more into cutout heels right now, and less about a bumper platform.
Vintage fashion item you're currently on the hunt for:
I'm dying for this vintage Gautier sailor jacket! It's cotton and has a sailor collar and corseting. I've called every vintage dealer and all my homies at The Way We Wore, What Goes Around Comes Around, and Decades. I've looked all over eBay and every day I go on Google and search for "Gautier Sailor Jacket"—I'm really, really coveting it!
Political stance:
I'm definitely feeling the Bern.
