With Spring springing, it's time to welcome an array of stores that have just opened or will soon open. Here are some of the more noteworthy new ones:
It's weird to think that the biggest splash is being made by a t-shirt line getting its first store -- but Alternative Apparel makes damn nice cotton goods for the money, and they're opening a store at 337 Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice. They're feting it in high style with some of their celebrity fans; stay tuned for pictures and coverage.
Alex Maine is a high-concept twist on basics: If you break the name down -- “Alex” meaning “defender” and “Maine” meaning “homeland" -- you get that it's a pro-America, domestically made line of menswear. And they've got an on-site tailor. 8025 Sunset Blvd., in West Hollywood.
Opposite end of Sunset, opposite hemisphere: Hemingway and Pickett, opening in the old Mesh and Lace will focus on well designed gifties from Australia. They're expecting to open in early May at 3208 West Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake.
Speaking of Australia, the Aussie surf/lifestyle brand Insight is launching a retail/art gallery concept store in Venice at 1501 Main St. Official grand opening is next week.
To see what the well-dressed smartphones are wearing this season, check out Mono. They've already been open for a couple of weeks, but they're finally throwing a grand opening. It's Japanese-designed/inspired high-tech tech gear, like cases, bags and more. 1219 1/2 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice.
Clare Vivier -- she of the simple, posh, extremely well-designed handbags and clutches -- is opening her first freestanding store in early May. It's called Vivier and Bentley, taking over the old space occupied by the Erge outlet. It will be in good company, right next door to The Hive and much loved lingerie emporium Bittersweet Butterfly. Clare & Co will open at 1404 Micheltorena St., Silverlake, on May 7.
